What To Consider When You Are Choosing Pet Insurance
Pet insurance can make a huge difference to both your pet and your finances. Imagine for a moment if your beloved pet develops a sudden extremely painful problem. You are going to be faced with an immediate and huge bill. Even worse, if you are unable to afford this huge bill, you may well end up with your pet suffering unnecessary pain for long periods of time. In the worst cases, pets are even being put down for illnesses which could have been treated had the owner been able to afford the payments on the insurance.
Pet plan insurance is available for the most common domestic pets, and for many more exotic types of animal. Obviously, there will be a premium to pay for the more exotic types of pet. Don't be fooled, however, into thinking that insurance for dogs, for example, is automatically going to be cheap. A lot depends on the type of dog, and in this regard pure bred dogs will cost more to insure than a mixed breed. This is because there are risks inherent in pure bred dogs, risks of hereditary diseases which are in the bloodline.
It is absolutely critical to know in advance what diseases are covered by your plan. Many of the older insurance plans did not cover this kind of inbred illness, and often people would take out insurance without realizing this. Make sure you check out any small print very thoroughly. Another subject which is riddled with controversy is that of pre-existing conditions. So many times, illnesses with a very similar range of symptoms will provoke arguments as to whether the condition actually existed before the insurance was taken out. It is important to ask questions, and record the answers, if your pet has any current health problems.
To determine the best pets insurance, you need to consider factors such as whether lab work and dental work are carried out and covered. Lab work especially can be frighteningly expensive, even over a third of the expense of the entire medical treatment. Age considerations are also vitally important, as many medical providers will place age restrictions on insurance policies. Although it is a good idea to insure your pet at the earliest possible opportunity, there are many insurers who are unable to offer insurance below a certain age.
Pet plan insurance should ideally be as comprehensive as possible, as no-one can predict the future, or know what misfortune may befall your pet. The exception to this is if you are in a financial position to cover all of the medical expenses which may accrue, in which case you can give serious thought to just taking out a very basic policy, and assuming most of the risk yourself, in the certain knowledge that your pet will not suffer as a result. If you have a cross breed dog, there is a strong case for taking out an accident only plan. Because your breed will not be subject to the most common inbred illnesses, you can afford to assume most of the risk, and only take out very basic pet insurance.
